We Love Reading

Have you ever noticed that our school library is at the heart of our school?
That is because reading is at the heart of everything that we do.  At SSPP, we are dedicated to ensuring our young children love to read. Supporting children to develop into fluent, confident and passionate readers is our priority. Here you can find lots of example of how we have been busy readers this year!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr. Seuss

Phonics

Phonics is a highly effective  way to read words.
Children who learn to read phonetically, will learn the key skills they need to tackle new words.

Phonics is such an important part of our reading learning journey! In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, we complete phonics lesson every day.

We use flashcards, word games, booklets and online games to help us. We work hard to know all of the phonic sounds and tricky words.

If you see us wearing a sticker with a sound on… challenge us to read the sound! We may even be able to tell you a word with the sound in.

Mr. Power has joined Year 1 many times for phonics bingo!

Reading Challenges

Each half term, the children take part in a reading challenge to encourage them to continue to practise and enjoy reading. Regular reading at home is the most beneficial home learning that the children can do. If they read for ten minutes over five days, then they will receive a certificate on their return to school and  team points. Extra reading gets them bonus team points!

Congratulations to the children who took part in last summer’s reading challenge with Leeds Library Service. Keep your eyes peeled for summer of 2025 reading challenge!

 Reading Buddies

Y5 children each have a younger reading buddy who they meet up with to hear read. We aim to do this for 10 minutes a day.

Class Novels

We aim to read our class novels in KS2 as often as we can. Some of the books had us HOOKED last year! Year 6 begged their teacher to continue reading their class Novel: Room 13! We introduce chapter books from  Year 1 onwards.

World Book Day 2024

We celebrate World Book Day every year.

In 2024, the children came to school in their pyjamas and brought their favourite book! They embraced the challenge of finding the wackiest places to read!

The children took part in lots of fun activities . Here Year 1 are writing a blurb for their  favourite books! Year 5 enjoyed  reading about the influential work of Mary Jackson,  the first African American engineer at NASA!

 Secret Reader

KS1 parents are invited to sign up to become a 'secret reader'. The children have no idea who is going to read to them on the day. We are so lucky that so many families and staff take part in this.

Reading Updates

This year, we have been lucky enough to buy lots of new books for our school library. Make sure you  look out for them when you visit!

Year 1 were so excited to read books from their Advent Calendar! These books are from the ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ collection. Each book is about the lives of amazing people who achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream
